What is Echocardiogram (ECHO)?
An echocardiogram, or “echo”, is a scan used to look at the heart and nearby blood vessels.It is a non-invasive ultrasound scan of the heart that shows its structure, function, and blood flow to help diagnose heart conditions.
What will this scan show?
An echocardiogram can help diagnose and monitor certain heart conditions by checking the structure of the heart and surrounding blood vessels, analysing how blood flows through them, and assessing the pumping chambers of the heart.
What do we expect during this scan?
Preparation
No special preparation is needed for a standard echocardiogram; for a transesophageal echo, you may need to fast for a few hours
Procedure
Gel is applied to the scan area, and the probe is used to scan. You may be asked to adjust your position, and gel will be cleaned off afterward.
How long it takes?
It typically takes between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the type and complexity. Your clinician will inform you if additional time is needed.
Risk & Limitations
Ultrasound scans are safe and accurate, and non-invasive, but mild discomfort or anxiety may occur, and body habitus can affect image quality.
What can I expect after the scan?
After the scan, there are three possible outcomes:
– For routine cases, you will receive your report via email within 24 hours.
– For urgent cases, the report will be provided within 12 hours, and with your consent, a referral to your GP can be made.
– For critical cases, the report will include an urgent note recommending immediate hospitalization.
Results
- Scan results will be emailed to you within 24 hours..
- Critical scan results will be referred to your GP or hospital .
Follow-Up
- A follow-up procedure may be scheduled if any concerns.
- The clinician will guide you on the next steps & options.
