What is a an Paediatric Scan?
Paediatric ultrasound refers to ultrasound scans specifically tailored for children, conducted by radiologists or sonographers with specialised training in paediatric imaging. It’s commonly used to assess organs like the brain (in infants), abdomen, kidneys, hips, heart (echocardiography), and soft tissues.
What will this scan show?
The clinician will assess the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, and aorta for conditions such as cysts, stones, inflammation, or masses. They will also evaluate blood flow in the liver and check for any fluid or ascites in the abdomen. This scan helps detect abnormalities and guide further treatment.
What do we expect during this scan?
Preparation
Fast for 6–8 hours prior to the scan.
Only water is permitted; tea, coffee, or milk may interfere with the results.
Take your medications as routine.
Procedure
Gel is applied to the scan area, and the probe is used to scan. You may be asked to adjust your position, and gel will be cleaned off afterward.
How long it takes?
It typically takes between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the type and complexity. Your clinician will inform you if additional time is needed.
Risk & Limitations
Ultrasound scans are safe and accurate, and non-invasive, but mild discomfort or anxiety may occur, and body habitus can affect image quality.
What can I expect after the scan?
After the scan, there are three possible outcomes:
– For routine cases, you will receive your report via email within 24 hours.
– For urgent cases, the report will be provided within 12 hours, and with your consent, a referral to your GP can be made.
– For critical cases, the report will include an urgent note recommending immediate hospitalization.
Results
- Scan results will be emailed to you within 24 hours..
- Critical scan results will be referred to your GP or hospital .
Follow-Up
- A follow-up procedure may be scheduled if any concerns.
